Scream 6: Melissa Barrera says sequel “goes all out” at Gore [Exclusive]

Before her new movie bed restPremiered on Tubi on December 7th, actress Melissa Barrera sat down with Collider’s Christina Radish to discuss the new psychological horror. Barrera has become something of a scream queen since taking on the role of Sam Carpenter in the Scream Re-Quel franchise earlier this year, so naturally we had to take this opportunity to inquire about what’s to come scream 6is scheduled to hit theaters in March 2023. As it turns out, the directing duo Matt Bettinelli-Opin and Tyler Gillett nothing will hold back when it comes to gore this time.

In a previous interview with Collider’s Perri Nemiroff, Barrera told us that the sixth film will be “20 times more humbling” because it would bring Ghostface to the streets of New York City for the first time. She spoke about how the new crew will experience a lack of humanity surrounded by people who refuse to get involved. Now Barrera tells us that isolation in a crowd will also be drenched in blood. Like Randy Meeks (Jamie Kennedy) said sequels mean “More blood, more blood. Carnage Candy! Your core audience just expects it.”

During her interview, we asked how it felt to step into an established franchise and essentially inherit the legacy. In Barrera’s case, she literally inherited the Woodsboro trauma as Sam Carpenter, the daughter of one of them Scream‘s original killers. Barrera loves the franchise and the family she’s built with the cast, saying, “There’s also something really, really special and unique about it Scream fanbase. They know they are part of the team. They know that if they want another one they have to show up for us and they did.” This Collider fans wanted to know how much blood is in it scream 6to which the actress explained:

“There was a saying on the set because (directors) Matt [Bettinelli-Olpin] and Tyler [Gillett] demanded more and more blood and more sweat. They always wanted more. “More blood spatter” was the saying because they would just keep wanting more. with the last one Scream, they tiptoed and tried to be very respectful of what the franchise had been up to that point and kept their inner bloody dreams in check. But with this one, they said, “We’re going all out.” It’s possibly a hundred times bloodier.”

Director since its inception in 1996 Wes Craven‘s Scream Movies have provided horror fans with the meta-murder sprees of our dreams, laying out the rules while breaking them to keep viewers on their toes. In 2022 we returned to Woodsboro in new hands for the first time, with Bettinelli-Opin and Gillett directing one of the most notable original horrors of the late 2000s, Ready or Not. Even though this movie had bodies that literally exploded, scream 5 was “respectful of what the franchise was,” and kept Ghostface’s stab-loving MO at about the same level of gore. It was with David Arquette‘s main character Dewey Riley that audiences will only get a taste of the revamped cruelty these new episodes will bring.

scream 6 will see the return of our brand new cast of key characters including Jenna Ortega as Tara Carpenter and Jasmine Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding as Randy’s super horror fan niece and nephew Mindy and Chad Meeks-Martin. Although that has been confirmed Scream queen Never Campbell will not be reprising her role as Sidney Prescott, Courtney Cox is returning as Gale Weathers and, by popular demand, Hayden Panettiere returns as Kirby Reed, who was first introduced in scream 4. Additional cast members and new potential killers and/or victims are included Dermot Mulroney, Samara weaving and Liana Liberato.

Luckily for Barrera, the actress says, “It’s fun to be covered in blood. Personally, I love being dirty and gory,” as it sounds like we’re getting plenty of “carnage candy.” scream 6 hits theaters on March 31, 2023.
