Newport – Getting to an NHIAA state tournament sometimes requires a lucky jump. When the Newport High Boys football team enters the postseason in a couple of weeks, the Tigers could look back on Tuesday as a key day in their progress.
After giving up a two-goal lead, the Tigers bounced back in overtime with a 3-2 win over Hinsdale at Sichol Field.
One jump really made the difference: Cooper Skarin’s 18-yard drive five minutes into the first extra session unleashed the Pacers goaltender and rattled off the bar for the win.
With Skarin and Ben Gallagher delivering precise serves to the flanks in attack, the Tigers (3-8-1) hit twice in the first half. Joe Boliero got the first, converting a breakaway feed from Gallagher. Isaac Lafayette scored the second after a pass from Boliero, who has five goals and one assist in Newport’s last three games.
However, the Tigers lost their momentum at half-time, and Hinsdale (5-7-0) equalized to send the game into overtime. Mike Wilkinson and Jarred Meyette helped calm the defense in front of goaltender Garret Harold and Newport brought his game back in time to win.
The win unofficially leaves the Tigers with Moultonborough for the final invitation to the upcoming 16-team NHIAA Division IV state tournament. Newport is free until Franklin is played next Tuesday.
